Day 26 A Sense of Gratitude

For this reason, ever since I heard

about your faith in the Lord Jesus

and your love for all the saints,

I have not stopped giving thanks

for you, remembering you in my prayers.

(Ephesians 1:15-16)

Have you ever been around someone who is an inspiration to you?

Growing up I was a huge Michael Jordan fan. I have to admit,

it was idolatry at its finest. However, I did have the opportunity to meet

him one time. And, while I was star-struck, our little meeting didn’t leave

a huge impact on me. Not that he wasn’t pleasant, because he was. However,

our meeting felt empty. It was kind of weird.

I look back at some of the other people that I have met throughout

my life. Let’s take Michael and Rocky Beene, American missionaries

who have dedicated their lives to serving the people of Guatemala.

Twice over the past couple of years, I have had the opportunity to

serve with them in Guatemala. Each time I have been with them, I didn’t

feel star-struck like I was after seeing Michael Jordan. I felt something

different. I had a sense of gratitude! I was so thankful to God for the time

I was able to spend with them, here and on the field.

When I see the Beenes interacting with people—how gentle and

caring they are, I am so blown away. The lengths to which they are willing

to go to serve people who many would just overlook, astounds me. When

I see the spiritual leaders they are to so many, I am floored. And, when I

see how loving they are toward each other, I am in awe.

Each time I leave, I find myself saying, “Man, I wish I could be

more like them! Thank you, God, for this moment!” They inspire me to be

a better follower of God.

I believe that this is what Paul is praying in regards to the Ephesians

in the above passage. He is in awe of their faith. He is an awe of their

servant hearts. He is in awe of their love for each other. And all of that

leads him to thank God for them.

Naturally, this time of year, we reflect over our lives. We think

about all of the things that we are thankful for. We reminisce and appreciate

all the different memories and experiences that we have had.

We remember all the people who have done great things and have made

contributions to our lives.

So, today, reflect upon who God has placed in your life to inspire

you to be a better Christian. Who do you know that is a shining example

of how to love others? Who is that man or woman of great faith? Whoever

that person is, take time to thank God for them as Paul did. Give God

thanks for them and remember them in your prayers.
